I'm Alex~ the mind, the hands, the sweat + the silliness behind Somnium of Alex Zim.
I'm a willing slave to the arrangement of color and form, in any given medium. I've been translating that need into jewelry since 2001, give or take.
To my beloved parents I credit my love for the arts and sciences that surround me every day of my life.
I find tremendous value + inspiration in the infinite palettes and forms of Nature's creations.
I'm awed by the energy of stones, colors and found objects... the vibrations that are the fundamental stuff of, literally, everything.
Each and every thing I create is infused with love and positive energy. I'm especially fond of bringing new life + fresh beauty to things once discarded. All of my materials are carefully selected, ensuring the highest quality + longevity of every piece.
WHO?
WHAT?
I lovingly and meaningfully handcraft everything on this site.
My materials are as wide-ranging as my inspirations, and carefully hand-selected to ensure the beauty + integrity of Somnium.
From semi-precious gems to old, rusty washers found in a random parking lot, I find beauty everywhere. I see potential in everything.
Most of my designs are created in the moment. I'll begin with a single stone or component that catches my eye, that inspires me, and simply roll with it.
Needless to say, I create quite a mess of possibilities on my workbench. Order out of chaos.
That said, should one of my pieces inspire you, but sumpn's not quite right (length, size, color, stone- whatever), just talk to me.
I LOVE tailoring to the individual whim! Moreso, I'm tickled to incorporate astrology, numerology, chakra mending, etc.
I'm thrilled to make it specifically yours.
Ah, one last thing... Since I can't recall the last time I made the
exact same thing twice, I'm proud to ensure that all my pieces are one of a kind.
WHY?
Again, there's the whole arrangement of color + form gig.
The order out of chaos.
My hyperactive mind is filled with thought and chatter at any given moment, so it's noisy up there.
That condition absolutely has its perks at times, but otherwise, I need upstairs to shaddup now and then.
Creating, arranging, solving aesthetically pleasing puzzles quiets things down for me. It's a meditative process that brings me such peace on so many levels.
It's a key to my own, personal sanity + longevity.
Now, that couples beautifully with my inherent desire to make others smile. I'm not in this solely for the money (though that helps)~ I'm in it for the interaction, the collaboration, the mutual creation of a thing that carries energy and memory of a crossing of paths.
I love people. I love adornment. I love solving puzzles.
It's a win-win :)

I absolutely love this! It's incredibly gorgeous and far prettier in person! The packaging was also very lovely and it arrived safely. I've never seen anything like it and I will definitely recommend them to my friends! I also love that I can wear it as a bracelet or a necklace, not to mention it's one of my favorite lyrics. I can't say enough nice things about working with Alex. She made a beautiful custom piece for one of my best friends and my friend adores it. Every detail was on point including the meaning behind the words and stones chosen which was so special. Communication was excellent throughout the process and even the packaging was beautiful. Magnificent piece! Even more awesome seller too! Had a wonderful conversation during the buying process where she was patient and kind the whole time! Alex-they are even better than I imagined. You're packaging was artful and full of synchronicities-which is I believe the purpose and byproduct of art. This, for me, was so much more than a simple business transaction. The handful of trinkets were not the payoff-you were.
